The Association
The English Teachers' Association of NSW is a professional association of teachers committed to stimulating teaching and learning in English.
ETA seeks to present examples of best practice in the profession to promote rich learning experiences for teachers and secondary students. ETA's purpose is to support its members through the provision of professional development of teachers and advocacy in the interests of ensuring the quality and appropriateness of the experience of English for students.
ETA membership is open to all who are keen to further this aim be they teachers practising in any school, education system or sector, or professionals with a particular interest in the teaching and learning of English. Our membership stands at about 2000 in the Sydney metropolitan area and 16 regional branches throughout NSW.
ETA NSW is managed by an Executive elected by its membership and and voluntary committees of members working in their area of interest. It is affiliated with other professional groups of English teachers in Australia through the Australian Association for the Teaching of English (AATE) and with teachers in other curriculum areas through the Professional Teachers' Council, New South Wales. To access a diversity and depth of expertise, ETA forms partnerships with other agencies for particular projects.
ETA has regular and formalised procedures for offering a range of services.
These include:
- forums for members to participate in the consultation process on new syllabuses and assessment issues
- surveys of members' views for consultation purposes
- teleconferencing to ascertain and express branch opinions and positions
- compilation of survey responses for submission to government agencies
- direct discussions with the Minister for Education, the minister's advisers and officials of the NSW Board of Studies regarding the views of ETA members
In addition, all members receive:
- Four editions of mETAphor a year (ETA journal)
- Three editions of English in Australia (AATE journal)
- Web site for latest professional ideas, information and services
- Electronic discussion board for curriculum issues
- Electronic newsletters
- Representation on curriculum consultative groups
- Access to ETA and AATE conferences, publications and courses at discounted rates
