Treasurer

Key Responsibilities

In addition to the responsibilities of the Executive, the Treasurer will

  • Ensure that the ETA operates in accordance with its strategic plan and meets its legal and financial reporting requirements.
  • Monitor the performance of members of the professional and administrative staff particularly in relation to the organisations’ financial processes and reporting.
  • Develop budgets, in consultation with the Chairs of Specialist Committees, Executive and Executive officers, for implementing ETA policy.
  • Provide financial report at the 6 Executive meetings.
  • Provide appropriate reports as Public Officer (Annual Report, Audited Financial Reports) to the Office of Fair Trading.

Summary of Roles

The Treasurer must

  • Undertake a duty of care for the governance of the English Teachers’ Association.
  • Maintain knowledge of the organisation and personal commitment to its goals and objectives
  • Follow conflict of interest and confidentiality policies.
  • Attend Executive meetings and ETA events.
  • Review agenda and supporting materials prior to meetings.
  • Promote ETA at local and state level.
  • Serve as financial officer of the organisation
  • Manage, with the finance committee, the Executive's review of and action related to the Executive's financial responsibilities.
  • Work with the book keeper to ensure that appropriate financial reports are made available to the Executive on a timely basis.
  • Prepare the annual budget and present the budget to the Executive for approval.
  • Review the annual audit and answer Executive members' questions about the audit
  • Serve as the Public Officer of the organization and ensure that appropriate reports are submitted to the Office of Fair Trading.

Profile of Treasurer*

The Treasurer should be an individual member of ETA and demonstrate:

  • A knowledge and understanding of ETA’s mission, services, policies, and programs and concern for the development of the organisation.
  • A willingness to contribute to the governance of the organisation and take responsibility for financial management and reporting.
  • An interest in the professionalism of English teachers and an ability to be responsive to the needs of members in the development of that professionalism.
  • An ability to work harmoniously and productively with others.
  • An ability to monitor processes and work of ETA staff in relation to the processing and reporting of finances
  • Sound understanding of financial and managerial accounting for nonprofit organisations
  • An interest and ability in developing financial budgeting, monitoring and reporting skills to further the aims and reputation of the profession.

Time

  • 4 hours in addition to committee time on average per week.
