ETA Executive

Nature and Function

The Executive will consist of 9 members including the President, Secretary and Treasurer of the ETA.

  • Members of the Executive will be elected by the membership for a 2 year term, providing a report of performance every 12 months.
  • The maximum tenure of office will be 3 consecutive terms per position.
  • The Executive will meet at least six times a year.
  • Members of the Executive will also be a member of at least 1 committee so that all committees will have at least one of its members represented on the Executive.
  • Public communications by the Executive will be through the President in consultation with Executive Officers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensuring that the ETA operates in accordance with its mission and meets its legal requirements.
  • Reviewing and ratifying systems of risk management, internal compliance and codes of conduct.
  • Appointing and monitoring the performance of members of the professional and administrative staff.
  • Determining the scope and limits of the Executive officers’ responsibilities.
  • Setting directions for ETA policy on recommendations of and on issues identified by Specialist Committees.
  • Developing strategies, in consultation with the Chairs of Specialist Committees and Executive officers for implementing ETA policy.
  • Maintaining relationships with national and international professional associations.
  • Contributing to a regular Executive Section in the quarterly journal.

Summary of Roles

A member of the Executive must

  • Undertake a duty of care for the governance of the English Teachers’ Association.
  • Maintain knowledge of the organisation and personal commitment to its goals and objectives.
  • Represent the association to government, media and other educational bodies when and where required by the President and/or Executive Officer
  • Assist the Executive in carrying out its fiduciary responsibilities.
  • Follow conflict of interest and confidentiality policies.
  • Attend Executive meetings and ETA events.
  • Review agenda and supporting materials prior to meetings.
  • Be a member of at least 1 committee
  • Promote ETA at local and state level.

Profile of Executive members

  • A member of the Executive should be an individual member of ETA and demonstrate:
  • A knowledge and understanding of ETA’s mission, services, policies, and programs and concern for the development of the organisation.
  • A willingness to contribute to the governance of the organisation and take responsibility for its compliance to legal requirements.
  • An interest in the professionalism of English teachers and an ability to be responsive to the needs of members in the development of that professionalism.
  • An ability to work harmoniously and productively with others.
  • An interest and ability in developing certain skills (if required) to further the aims and reputation of the profession.

Strategic Directions for 2009

  • Ensuring the strength and integrity of the Association
  • Monitoring the financial development of ETA
  • Developing and overseeing the implementation of the 3 year strategic plan
  • Advocating on behalf of the profession.

Time Commitment

  • 2 hours each week in total (on average throughout the year)
  • At least 6 meetings a year.
